Code-ology Review Class

Code-ology is on hold for 2008

National Coding Certification Examination

A National Survey of Medical Practices reflected a $2.00/hour decrease in office salaries over the previous year.  Fortunately, this did not include the billing or coding staff.  RN's, Nursing Assistants, and clerical staff were the most severely impacted.

Coders abstract information from the patient record, combine it with their knowledge of the coding guidelines and chose a code for the services or procedures performed.  To become a certified coder you need extensive medical coding experience and have to pass a rigorous exam.

Coding consultants have maintained their hold on highest earnings at an average of $52,075 annual salary, according to the 2003 AAPC Salary Survey, compared to physician and facility based coders at an average of $31,524 and $31,594 respectively.  Certified coders in the Northeast are paid nearly $7,500 more annually than certified peers in the North Central United States, while $39,046 is the average pay for a certified coder nationwide.

Even with the negative economic trend in healthcare, Certified Coders remain in demand since proper coding can mean financial success or failure of a medical practice.
